Sexual Offences in Portugal

This service is for people who have been arrested because the police suspect them of a sexual crime. These charges are serious. They can lead to prison, fines and a criminal record (an official note of the crime that stays with you).

People in this situation are often shocked, scared and unsure of their rights. They may also worry about what others will think and about their work and family life. The service offers a legal defence and support through the court process, so that the person's rights are protected and they get a fair trial.

How it works

It starts with a talk about the charge. This can happen at the lawyer's office or at the police station, if the person has been arrested. Then the evidence is studied and a plan for the defence is made.

The lawyer speaks for the person at every stage: early court hearings, talks with the prosecutor (the official who brings the case against the accused) and the trial. If needed, the lawyer can also ask a higher court to change the decision. This is called an appeal.

All through the case, the lawyer works to protect the person's rights, including the right to be treated as innocent until proven guilty.
