Defamation in Portugal

Defamation means someone has said or published false things about you in public that damage your good name. It can hurt your personal life, your work and your finances. This service helps people who believe this has happened to them to answer the false statements through the courts.

Who can use it

• Anyone, whatever their nationality. There are no age or visa conditions.
• The false statements must have been made in the country where the case is brought.
• You need good evidence that the statements were false, caused harm and were made in public, and that the person making them was at fault.

How it works

• First talk: understanding what happened, collecting early evidence and judging how strong the claim is.
• Starting the case: preparing and filing a claim in court that sets out the false statements, the harm done and what you are asking for.
• Gathering evidence: collecting everything needed to support the claim.
• Court: representing you during the hearings.
• Outcome: either an agreement with the other side or a decision by the court.

What a successful case can bring

If the case succeeds, it can clear your name. It may also bring money for the harm done, and a court order stopping further false statements.

What the service includes

• Detailed interviews about what was said and how it affected you.
• Research to support the claim and find out who is responsible.
• Preparing and running the court case.
• Regular updates and advice.
• Follow-up after the decision, to make sure the court's orders are carried out.
