AFM Number Application (Greek Tax ID) in Greece
The AFM is Greece's tax identification number, needed for a property purchase, a registered lease, a bank account, a residence permit and almost every other formal step; English-speaking lawyers obtain it for foreigners at the tax office, through the online service or as tax representative under a power of attorney.
About AFM Number Application (Greek Tax ID) in Greece
The AFM, in Greek ΑΦΜ – Αριθμός Φορολογικού Μητρώου, is the Greek tax identification number, also searched as the Greek tax number, Greek TIN or tax ID Greece. Some older lists and lawyer pages call this service “Obtain AFM Number”. It is issued by the tax authority AADE (ΑΑΔΕ) through the local tax office (ΔΟΥ) and, for people living abroad, through the tax office for residents abroad in Athens or its online channel. Almost nothing in Greece is done without it: buying or inheriting property, signing a lease that the landlord registers, opening a bank account, connecting electricity, buying a car, starting work or a business, and filing the residence permit application after any national D visa. It is an identifier, not a residence status and not, by itself, a tax obligation.
Who needs one
Buyers preparing a property purchase or a golden visa investment, future residents arriving on a digital nomad, FIP, work or Blue Card visa, heirs of someone who owned assets in Greece, owners who will rent out a Greek home, and EU citizens settling in Greece. Companies and non-resident landlords receive their own numbers.
How it is obtained in Greece
A resident applies at the tax office for their address with a passport and proof of address. A person abroad has three ways, as reported: an online application through the AADE portal with identification by video call; an appointment at the tax office for residents abroad; or a tax representative in Greece (φορολογικός εκπρόσωπος), often a lawyer, who files on the person's behalf under a power of attorney and receives the authority's letters. Foreign powers of attorney carry an apostille and a certified Greek translation. Together with the number the applicant receives, or later requests, the activation key (κλειδάριθμος) for the online tax account, myAADE, where returns and certificates live.
What to watch for
- The address on the record decides whether the tax office treats the person as resident or non-resident; it has to be updated after moving to Greece or leaving, otherwise returns go to the wrong office (see ending tax residency).
- The AFM is often confused with the AMKA, the social security number; both are needed for work and health care, and they come from different bodies.
- The online procedure for foreigners has been changed and extended more than once; which identity check and which documents apply depends on nationality and on where the applicant is.
- A representative stays responsible for notices until the appointment is formally ended.
