About restraining orders in Turkey

A restraining order is a court order that tells a person to keep away from someone, for example from their home, work or other places they often go. Being a victim of violence abroad can be especially hard without family nearby or when you do not know the language or the support system.

Who it is for

People who have suffered harassment, threats, domestic violence or other crimes and want the law to keep the other person away.

How it works

  • A formal complaint is made against the person.
  • Enough proof is given to support the complaint.
  • The court looks at the proof and decides whether to order the person to stay away. The order can be made to protect the victim while the case goes on, or as a final order after the trial, depending on how serious the offence is.

When someone is found guilty of domestic violence, a restraining order is normally made as part of the sentence.

What the service includes

  • A first talk with an English-speaking lawyer about your situation and your options
  • Collecting proof and filing the request for the order, and any other order needed
  • Representing you in court and following up so the order is made and respected
  • Help in later cases such as separation or divorce, including child support and visits

A restraining order is backed by the law, which can give a sense of safety and relief.

  • The lawyer knows Turkish law extremely well, including the options open to me as a dual Turkish and American citizen living abroad, and I was amazed at how fast she understood my situation. At each stage she laid out the possible next steps, and I never felt stuck or pushed in one direction. Costs were agreed in advance and were very reasonable for the work done. I truly felt she was on my side throughout, and I am completely satisfied with the result. She is extremely friendly and very professional, and I will certainly keep using her for any other legal matter I need handled in Turkey.
