Who it is for
People who married in another country and now want the marriage recorded in this country. They usually have a link to the country, as a citizen or resident. If the marriage is not recorded, it may not be recognised here. That can cause problems, such as losing automatic rights to inherit or tax benefits. Recording it in the Civil Registry (the official record of births, marriages and deaths) helps avoid this.
Note: this service is not for getting married. It is for people who are already married.
What you need
- At least one spouse must be a citizen of this country
- The marriage must be valid in the country where it took place
Recording the marriage is not required by law, but it helps avoid legal problems. Which country's law applies can depend on the spouses' nationality.
What the service includes
- A first talk with an English-speaking lawyer to see which steps apply to you
- An explanation of the steps, time and costs
- Help getting the papers, including official stamps and translations
