About d7 visa in Portugal

The D7 visa is a residence visa for Portugal. It is for people from outside the EU, including British citizens since Brexit, who have a steady income of their own, such as a pension, and want to live in Portugal. Their dependent children and parents can also get the right to live there.

Income needed

You need to show that you have at least the minimum yearly income set by law, enough to live in Portugal for at least 12 months:

  • First adult (the applicant): €7,980 a year.
  • Each extra adult: €3,996 a year.
  • Each child under 18, or adult child who depends on you: €2,400 a year.

How it works

There are two stages. First you apply at the Portuguese consulate or embassy in the country where you live. Then you go to the immigration and border service in Portugal.

What you get

  • A residence permit for 2 years, which can be renewed for 3 more years.
  • After 5 years, you may apply for permanent residence or Portuguese citizenship.
  • You are expected to stay in Portugal at least 6 months in a row, or 8 months in total with breaks.
  • Your family can join you.
  • Access to the health system and to the courts.

This visa does not give you the right to work in Portugal. You may still work in other countries, as long as you do not stay away so long that you lose your residence.

Special tax status

D7 holders may apply for a special status for new residents, called Non-Habitual Resident (NHR). It lasts ten years. With it, much income earned abroad is not taxed in Portugal if it is taxed where it comes from. Some income earned in Portugal is taxed at lower rates, and pensions are taxed at 10%.

What the service includes

  • Help from an immigration lawyer to prepare the right documents for the consulate.
  • Help filling in and sending the forms in both countries on time.
  • Acting as your tax contact in Portugal and getting your tax number (NIF).
  • Going with you to collect your residence permit.
  • Help applying for the special tax status.
  • Help renewing the visa, and longer-term help with legal and tax matters.

What clients say about our service

  • The lawyer and her team responded to our inquiry straight away and stayed just as responsive for the entire service. Her team clearly grasped our needs and objectives, and thanks to their network of established local contacts they achieved our goals on time, with professionalism and competence. She always offered to be available, herself or through her team, for any questions or concerns we had, and she has kept in touch to support us throughout the visa process, in English that was flawless. She clearly exceeded our expectations. We are completely satisfied, and we will no doubt have further legal matters in the future and have no hesitation in asking her to help us with all sorts of Portuguese legal questions. All in all, a fantastic job, and a huge thanks to the team and the service.

  • I was happy with the service and very satisfied overall. I do have one suggestion: an email I was sent was written for Americans and used terminology that differs from British usage, which could be fixed in future correspondence.

  • Our lawyer has been outstanding in guiding and leading us through the whole visa process and giving legal support with buying the property. He is responsive, committed and friendly, and always goes the extra mile to get things done. We count ourselves lucky to have him as our lawyer and as a good friend in Portugal.
