About convert student visa to working visa in Italy

Who this is for

This service is for people living in the country on a student visa who want to stay and work there. Usually they have finished their studies, research, training or internship and are looking for a job.

People who have spent at least three years in full-time education there often apply to change their student visa into one that lets them live and work. There are two main routes: taking a job offer, or setting up your own business. People who have finished a master's degree or a PhD may instead apply for a one-year visa to look for work.

The process can be confusing: there are many rules, and every document must be correct and handed in properly.

What you usually need

  • To have successfully finished your studies, research, training or internship in the country.
  • An employer willing to hire you and support your application, and a signed employment contract.
  • Not to be banned from entering the country.
  • No criminal record there, or in the countries where you lived, for the last five years.
  • That both you and your employer can meet the money and legal duties set by law.

How it works

  1. The employer files an application form (EX-03) with supporting papers, such as a copy of your passport and proof of your qualifications.
  2. The application goes to the foreigners' office of the province where you will work.
  3. If it is approved, you must register with Social Security within one month of being told.
  4. You then apply in person for your foreigner identity card at the foreigners' office or police station of that province.

There are official fees, and each step has time limits that must be met.

What the service covers

  • A first meeting to understand your situation and goals.
  • Help gathering, preparing and handing in the documents and the application.
  • Legal guidance throughout, and handling contact with the authorities for you.
  • Making sure later steps, such as Social Security registration and getting your identity card, are done correctly and on time.
  • Support after the change, as you start your job.

English-speaking immigration lawyers can explain each step and what it means, and spot possible problems early.
